ISO 9001 is a basic essential set of management criteria that provide the foundation for quality and continual improvement. Managers need to address and document these basic criteria in order to ensure that their products and/or services meet the wants, needs, expectations and requirements defined by their customers.
ISO 9001 international quality management standards, a product of the International Organization for Standardization, were first published in 1987 to assist businesses and organizations to develop and maintain quality practices.
The standards are generic and are applicable to marketing organizations, wineries, food and beverage companies, manufacturing, service organizations and government operations. The focus of ISO is on systems - linked interacting processes - which are common to all businesses. An ISO 9001 quality management system provides effective and efficient control of all your quality processes.
Businesses develop quality management systems for three primary reasons:
As organizations implement ISO, they experience increased ability to meet performance goals and business objectives. They discover ways to streamline their business and therefore increase the bottom line, i.e., increase profit in a for-profit business and increase efficiency and performance in a not-for-profit organization.

Quality is meeting and exceeding the expectations of one's customers. Quality is not just a general feeling of goodness; it is a measurable goal, a performance standard and the result of systematic planning, implementation and evaluation. To survive in a competitive environment, businesses providing goods or services must ensure that their customers are receiving quality for their investment.
In summary, the ISO approach to quality management allows you to say what you do, do what you say and (im)prove it -QED.
Once a decision has been reached to implement one or more of the international standards, we (QED Consulting Group) make an executive presentation to management about the process of implementation and help them decide on the implementation team.
We assist them in documenting, in a series of procedures, their quality (or environmental and/or safety) processes: those processes that need to be performing consistently in order to produce their product(s). These processes also include requirements of the standard, such as management's responsibilities, what the organization wants to monitor and measure to ensure the achievement of the goals, how they will handle the internal auditing function and what they will do with product/service that isn't 'perfect' (called non-conforming product), and how they will perform corrective and preventive actions so that a problem, or a mistake never happens twice. This is one of the ways that a management system brings about continual improvement.
Work instructions and/or standard operating procedures may be required for an organization if the lack of instructions may result in a problem. So, we determine with the implementation team whether or not work instructions are needed.
If any forms are used in the business, they must also be included in the documented system so that they are also controlled. This is to prevent inadvertent use of obsolete forms (a problem in the governmental and healthcare areas).
Next, we perform a GAP Analysis, to ascertain if there are any gaps between the newly implemented system and the standard's requirements. When all the loops are closed, the gaps filled, we train the workforce in their roles and responsibilities and train an internal audit team.
The internal audit team then begins their auditing function, to make sure that we are doing what we say we are doing in our procedures, and to find opportunities for improvement. At this point, the management system or systems is/are in operation. To be certified means that a third party Registrar audits the organization in relation to the requirements of the standard. If the organization is meeting the criteria of the standard(s), they receive ISO Certification. The Registrar provides ongoing surveillance to ensure that the system is continuing to perform and achieve its business goals. It is the way the marketplace is assured that product produced by this business will consistently conform to the requirements of the customer.
QED Consulting Group was founded in 1994 by Dr. Judith E. Luchsinger. One of its original purposes was to bring the international quality management standard ISO 9001 to agencies and businesses that were unfamiliar with quality and other management systems and the business improvement and accountability they can bring.
Living in the northern California wine country and enjoying all things wine, Dr. Luchsinger was hired by Brown-Forman Corporation to implement ISO 9001:1994 at the Fetzer Vineyard site, including the Design and Development of new products. This first success in the wine industry, led to the implementation of the quality management system standard, and other standards, in many wineries from California to New York, from the largest wine production facility in the world (Mission Bell) to a boutique winery (Blackstone Sonoma). Thus, wineries have become a specialty of hers.
As the company has expanded, colleagues have brought in additional skills and experience. We now offer consulting services for any kind or size of business in a variety of international and national standards, audit training, process improvement, lean manufacturing and Six Sigma.
